Messi missed the most penalties in a World Cup

Lionel Messi became the first player to miss two penalties in one World Cup, after failing to beat goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir in Argentina's match against Egypt in the round of 16.

In the 21st minute at Atlanta, Argentina received a penalty when left back Nicolas Tagliafico was fouled by Haissem Hassan in the penalty area. Messi took responsibility for the penalty kick, but the shot to the right corner was guessed in the right direction by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir and pushed away with both hands. The Argentinian captain was so disappointed that he did not chase after the second ball, but wandered around the 11m mark.

This is the second time Messi has missed a penalty kick  World Cup 2026, after a shot out in the group stage against Austria. After that, he still scored a double from live balls. According to statistics of  Opta, the Argentinian superstar became the first player in World Cup history to miss two penalty kicks in the same period, excluding penalty shootouts.

Messi also increased the total number of missed penalty kicks in the World Cup finals to four. No other player in the history of the tournament has missed more than two shots. Behind Messi is former Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan with two missed shots.

The missed kick against Egypt also caused Messi’s penalty kick efficiency at the World Cup to drop to 50%. The 39-year-old striker took eight penalties in the World Cup, scoring four and missing four.

On the air  BBC Radio 5 Live, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson admitted to being surprised when Messi couldn’t score from the penalty spot. “No one on the field thought Messi would miss. Shobeir read the right direction and deserves praise,” Robinson said.

Comment above  ITV, former Scotland striker Ally McCoist also commented that Messi does not show his usual confidence. “It’s hard to believe. He doesn’t look really confident,” McCoist said. “It was a good save, but also a pretty favorable shot for the goalkeeper.”

Egypt’s hero is goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. He became the fourth goalkeeper in World Cup history to stop two penalties in the same period, after Poland’s Jan Tomaszewski in 1974, America’s Brad Friedel in 2002 and Poland’s Wojciech Szczesny in 2022. Previously, in the final round of the group stage against Iran, the 26-year-old goalkeeper pushed away striker Mehdi Taremi’s penalty shot.

At the time Messi missed the penalty kick, Argentina  led 0-1  after midfielder Yasser Ibrahim’s header in the 15th minute. This is also the first time since the opening match of the 2022 World Cup against Saudi Arabia that Argentina has fallen behind at the World Cup.

Argentina  also became the third South American team to be beaten by an African representative in the World Cup knock-out round, after Colombia – Cameroon in 1990 and Uruguay – Ghana in 2010. Colombia then lost, and Uruguay beat Ghana on penalties.

The strange thing is that 10 minutes after missing the penalty, Messi had the opportunity to kick a free kick from over 30 meters away. He created even more danger than the penalty, when he sent the ball spinning against the post.
